Screen time is one of the most talked-about issues in education right now.

With new guidance on student device use coming into effect in some Australian states from 2027, and similar conversations unfolding in New Zealand and around the world, teachers and school leaders are navigating important questions about the role of technology in learning.

How can schools balance screen time and digital learning? What principles guide effective technology use for learning? And when might a non-digital approach be more appropriate?

These are just some of the questions Dr Karley Beckman will explore in our upcoming webinar, Balancing Screen Time and Digital Learning in the Modern Era, hosted by 3P Learning.

Meet Dr Karley Beckman

Dr Beckman is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Wollongong and Chief Investigator and Education Co-Lead at the ARC Centre of Excellence for the Digital Child.

Her research examines how children, adolescents and educators interact with digital technologies, with expertise spanning device use in schools, online learning platforms, data privacy and AI in education.

Dr Beckman regularly contributes to public discussions on technology in education and brings an informed perspective to the questions many schools are working through today.

What will the webinar explore?

In this 40-minute live session, followed by Q&A, Dr Beckman will explore some of the key questions surrounding screen time and digital learning, including:

  • How can schools balance screen time and digital learning without blanket bans?
  • How can we distinguish everyday from educational uses of screens?
  • What are the foundational principles behind effective technology use for learning?
  • Where might technology not be the whole solution?

Whether you’re navigating new guidance, responding to questions from families or reviewing technology use in your school, this webinar offers an opportunity to hear directly from a researcher working in this field.

And with a live Q&A following the presentation, you’ll have the chance to put your own questions to Dr Beckman.
